MELBOURNE DIOCESAN BOARD OF MISSIONS

A MEETING of members of the Church of England was held at Melbourne on the 8th January 1851, for the purpose of forming a society in connexion with the Australian Board of Missions. His Honor the Superintendent, Charles Joseph La Trobe was in the chair; and the following resolutions were proposed and unanimously adopted:-

Moved by the Right Rev. the Lord Bishop of Melbourne, Bishop Charles Perry, seconded by Henry Moor, Esq., M.L.C.:-

That in the opinion of this meeting, it is the duty of every branch of the Church of Christ to take an active part in the Evangelization of the world; and that, in proportion to the zeal and energy which it exhibits therein, a Church may expect the blessing of God to be manifested in its own general prosperity and enlargement, and in the edification of its individual members.

Moved by the Worshipful the Mayor, William Nicholson; seconded by the Rev. Daniel Newham:-

That in the fulfilment of this duty, and the confident expectation of this blessing, there be constituted in connection with the Church of England in this diocese, a board to be entitled "The Melbourne Diocesan Board of Missions," the objects of which shall be -

1st. To establish and maintain missions, and generally to assist in any efforts for the conversion and civilisation of the aboriginal inhabitants of the diocese:

2nd. To co-operate, as far as possible, with the Provincial Board of Missions at Sydney, for the conversion and civilisation of the heathen races in all the islands of the Western Pacific:

3rd. To receive and forward any subscriptions given to particular missionary societies or special missionary objects, approved by the Committee.

Moved by William Foster Stawell, Esq.; seconded by the Rev. Septimus Lloyd Chase:-

That the following be the rules and regulations of the Society.

That the following gentlemen be elected office-bearers, and members of the committee for the ensuing year, viz. - The Rev. Daniel Newham, Richard Grice, Esq., Treasurers; the Rev. Henry W. W. Liddiard, Mr. William Foster Stawell, Esq., Secretaries. Committee _ Messrs. Redmond Barry, Edward Barker, Edward Bell, Henry Box, William Henry Campbell, George Haskell, Alistair McKenzie, Alexander McCrae, William Nicholson (the Mayor), Germain Nicholson, James Denham Pinnock, Robert Williams Pohlman, George Augustus Robinson, James Simpson, John Matthew Smith, Grey Smith, Robert Willan, and Edward Williams.

Moved by Colin Campbell, Esq., seconded by Dr. Edward Barker:-

That the thanks of this meeting be given to his Honor the Superintendent for his kindness in presiding on the present occasion, and for his able conduct in the chair.

The meeting concluded with singing the Doxology.
